About Bioenergy

The access to adequate and affordable energy is one of the basic requirements for guaranteeing the wellbeing and development of rural populations on a sustainable basis. Nearly two billion people, mostly in rural areas of developing countries, are without electricity and rely on burning fuelwood for their household activities. Bioenergy includes all energy produced from biomass, from living organisms of biological origin. Biomass is a locally available energy source that can provide electricity, heat and power. Biofuels include solid, liquid or gas fuels derived from biomass and can be divided into four categories: woodfuels; agrofuels; municipal waste and fisheries by-products.
